Flexitarian No More

What a fun trip!

Today I did a 5 mile recovery run. I had the hardest time getting out of bed but once I got moving I was fine. I think my average was around 9:45.

Last night I ate meat for the first time since the first week of June and I was so sick. I don't think my body is used to digesting meat anymore. I have been getting criticism on my decision to quit eating meat. Originally I chose to be a flexitarian, but now I am leaning more towards vegetarianism. I wanted to try eating meat again before our trip next month in case I chose to eat meat while I was there, but now I am leaning towards never eating it again. From about 3:30am on this morning I had a terrible stomach ache, almost like heart burn, which I have never had before. It is crazy that I have been used to eating meat my whole life and by not eating it only a few times in the past 3 months, my body is telling me that it can't handle it anymore. Thank goodness I really enjoy all the recipes that I have made the past month, we have never eaten so good before!

I'm so intrigued following your switch to vegetarianism. My family is basically veg, since my husband grew up veggie in India, and so we are raising our kids this way.

I have found it difficult at times though, and tend to have some cheat days. As well, I have worried about protein and iron and all that for the kids.

So, I love hearing how an avid runner like you is doing it and liking it. I will have to go back and write down some of those cookbooks you were speaking about.

Your dedication to health through running and now your decision to be vegetarian are both inspiring!
I intern with Meatless Monday, a non-profit with Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and have also been vegetarian for all my life. My transistion to complete veg happened over time too. I was cooking meat at home less and less because my husband had gone vegetarian, then I was only eating it at restaurants or gatherings and then I finally made the plunge and went for it. It's been 2 1/2 years for me and I don't miss meat at all. If anything it's helped me become more creative in the kitchen and pay closer attention to my diet and where I'm getting macronutrients from.

I'm sorry you had an upset stomach, I think it makes total sense that your body is adapting to life without meat!

i quit eating meat last fall for the second time... i didnt eat it for like 8 years before college. ive been tracking my food the passed week and have been surprised by how much protein i get without eating meat!
