Bit during my long run

So yesterday I set out about 7am for my 17 mile run. I took a slightly new route, but the beginning was along a road that I have run along many times. I was approaching a farmstand/house and heard barking in the driveway.....Not thinking anything of it I continued to run past as normal and suddenly I saw 2 dogs sprint out of the driveway. A man yelled from the driveway "get back here" so I assumed they were his dogs and remembered to keep looking forward and keep running as my experience has seen that dogs usually run as far as their property and leave you alone. Well 2 dogs were in the road with me....One was a lighter color and one was reddish/brown and scarier looking, not so much domestic, but I was in a hurry to get out of there as I am afraid of dogs. They quickly caught up to me and the reddish brown one quickly chomped down on my left thigh. I screamed and the dogs went running away. I of course kept running because I was scared out of my mind. Knowing where the dogs had come from, I figured I could return to the house and see if the dogs had their vaccinations if need be. At this point I knew I had a hole in my running tights and some pain in my thigh, but I didn't think it broke skin. I called my husband upset, mostly because I was only 3 miles into my run that took a lot of mental preparation to go on as I have been suffering with a bruised tendon, so I was hesitant to even run. I wanted to complete my run and he told me, I am sure you will be fine, just finish. So I ran the remaining 14 miles and got home and pulled off my running tights. The animal broke skin, pretty badly. I think adrenaline got me through the run because my leg definintely was in pain. So we called animal control and they went to the home where the dogs came from. They had light colored dogs, but not a reddish/brown dog. So we were looking at a dog that didn't belong in that yard and a man who knew nothing of the situation...He didn't even know what had happened other than his dogs barking. The animal control officer basically said to get a rabies shot as he didn't think we would find out about the dog that bit me. So after doing research of what dogs looked like, I came to the conclusion that I wasn't chased by a dog, but a coyote. It looked similar to a German Shepard but was not as tall as a normal one, and had a very long snout. And it just so happens that there have been multiple coyote sightings in that exact area and an attack last month on a dog. See this article:

That attack was across the woods from the road I was on. So now I have had 5 shots to start my rabies vaccination and have to go back 4 more times for shots to protect myself. What a day I had, my family is scared for me to go out running and I am excited to get back out there and run 18 next weekend, as I know this is a rare occurrence. I guess this is just a warning to be aware on your runs. I had no time to pull out anything like mace or anything as he bit me so quickly. I have always known in my mind what I will do if a dog attacks me, but never thought about it just chomping down. Coyotes will most likely leave you alone if you run at it yelling, which I didn't know, instead I ran away. He didn't leave until I finally yelled in pain.

Wear Testing--Never Again!

So I am ending my wear-testing experiment. I was testing a pair of New Balance shoes and was very excited to get a lot of miles out of them. Well after about 50 miles, I am ready to give up on them. I have blisters all of over my feet and my ankle feels like my last year's case of tendonitis. Yes, this experience was not so much fun for me. Back to my trusty Mizuno Nirvana's, but I am worried it may be a little late, as my ankle is killing me. This may warrant an extra few rest days, and I don't take extra rest days. I have a hard time resting on my scheduled days.

Otherwise training for Vermont is going well. I am doing the Princess 1/2 Marathon next month in Orlando so we will see if my training can get me a new PR. Please ankle pain, go away, I need to run.

Trying out some new shoes

So I got chosen to wear test some shoes and I am excited that tomorrow the weather will be warm enough for me to try the shoes outside. Yesterday I did 10 miles on the treadmill and they seemed fine. I already had a little bit of pain in my foot so that is still there, but during the run, I really didn't feel it. The shoes are women's shoes, which is a nice break because I have been in men's shoes for the past year. I hate that my feet are so big that I have a hard time finding shoes in my size. I can't say I enjoy showing up for a race with a cute outfit on, and shoes that match my husband who doesn't care what he looks like. So yay, for a cute pair of shoes for the next 2 months.

I mapped out my 14 mile run just now, and I am excited to run around the neighborhood, I just hope the winds aren't too bad. Eric wouldn't let me do the route I wanted to because of all the snow on the side of the roads, so hopefully I don't get lost tomorrow. But ooooh, I can't wait for my post-run meal. I love marathon training!

Super 5K

So today I did the Super 5K race in Lowell, Massachusetts. The race that was "Born on the day the Patriot's won the Super Bowl." My sister is training for her first half marathon, and her training schedule calls for some races so I told her I would run this race with her.

I haven't ran a 5K in almost a year. I obviously like longer distances as I have time to warm up and get into my pace. So Kelli and I were chit chatting and I see a guy raise a gun and I was like "Ummm, I think we are starting." So we start and there are a lot of people in front of me that appeared to start where they didn't belong. I spent about a minute weaving around people which is crazy as this race only had like 250 people in it. So after weaving and the crowd thinned out, I looked at my Garmin and my pace was at about 7:05. My goal pace was 7:30, so this was obviously faster than I had planned, but I knew I would go out fast and settle in eventually. So mile 1 I finished in 7:25. Perfect. The first mile had a small hill that I passed quite a few people, and I felt great. Mile 2 was just the same. My pace was right around 7:30 and I was impressed with myself, although, my previous 5K proved a big slow down in the final mile, so I was banking on that. And that I did. It was during mile 3 that my asthma starting acting up. Note to self, don't forget inhaler for 5K's. I rarely use my inhaler during training, and don't carry it around during short runs. But my asthma is irritated by cold weather and I had a cold to top it off. So I slowed it down to an 8 minute pace for mile 3, and my lungs were burning. In the final .2 I sped up to a 6:30 pace, even though I felt like I was crawling. I finished in 23:41 (7:39 pace). My last 5K was in 25:21, so I set a big PR. And I got hardware! I signed up for the Filly division. (140+ pound women division.) Now I must point out, 140 pounds is at the bottom of my weight range for my height. If I weigh 140, I would be SKINNY, but apparently that is big for runners. But I digress, I got 1st in that division. If I had not signed up for that division I would have placed 3rd in my age group, so I still would have gotten a medal. Yay for progress! So overall, a good day for running. I still don't like 5K's though, I will take a marathon any day over this.
